The Right Size in the Wrong Location: AI-Assisted Fashion Stock Transfers

A customer needs a particular shirt size. One location has none ready to sell; another has several. Across the business, stock may look adequate. At the point of purchase, the answer is still “unavailable”.

This is a location problem as much as a demand problem. AI can help suggest where inventory might be needed, but a transfer works only when the exact variant is available to move and can reach its destination in time.

Give forecasting a defined job

Google Cloud describes TimesFM-based forecasting for time-series data without requiring users to train their own model. A fashion retailer could use a forecast as one input when estimating demand at a location.

It remains an estimate. It does not establish that a parcel will arrive on time, that every unit is saleable or that a past sales pattern will repeat. Those questions require operational information.

A proposed recommendation should therefore state both its demand assumption and its practical conditions: which variant, source, destination, quantity and arrival window.

Start with what can actually move

Review the exact product and size at each location. Separate units that are ready to transfer from those reserved for orders, under inspection, already allocated or still in transit. A total quantity without these distinctions can promise the same stock twice.

For a men's kurta-pyjama set, verify that the transfer refers to the complete sellable set and correct size. Do not substitute a visually similar standalone kurta. Men's and boys' products must remain separate even if a coordinated collection uses shared colours.

The source location also needs a reason to release the units. Its own upcoming demand and existing commitments belong in the recommendation, alongside the destination's expected need.

Show the decision as a small proposal

A reviewer should be able to read a single record and understand the move:

Review the cost of moving a small quantity as well. The goal is a useful decision, not the largest possible number of transfers.

Keep the movement visible until it is received

Shopify's inventory-transfer guidance describes tracking stock between locations, managing shipments and receiving full or partial quantities. Those operational records provide an important distinction between a planned movement and stock actually received.

When a transfer is approved, record the movement consistently. Do not count the units as freely available at both locations while they travel. If only part arrives, receive the confirmed quantity and investigate the difference rather than closing the record as though the full shipment appeared.

Keep the human decision attached to the recommendation. A rejected move may reflect a local constraint that never appeared in the model's inputs.

Judge the result after arrival

Review whether the stock arrived within the useful window, whether the source remained adequately supplied and whether staff had to correct the recommendation. Compare against a clearly defined alternative before claiming improved sales or reduced waste.
