The Anatomy of a Men’s Shirt: Details That Shape the Fit

A shirt is assembled from parts that must work as one. Understanding those parts makes it easier to judge fit, movement and visual balance without relying on vague labels.

The collar and collar band

The collar frames the face, while the collar band connects it to the neckline. Fasten the top button and check that the band sits level. Worn open, the collar should fall evenly on both sides.

The front placket

The placket forms the centre line of the shirt and carries the buttons and buttonholes. It should remain visually straight when the shirt is fastened, without strong pulling between buttons.

The yoke and shoulder seam

The yoke spans the upper back and helps shape the shirt across the shoulders. Its relationship with the shoulder seam influences both appearance and reach. Raise the arms and reach forward to see whether the upper back moves comfortably.

The armhole and sleeve

The armhole connects the sleeve to the body. A balanced armhole supports movement without excessive fabric gathering under the arm. Sleeve length should be considered together with shoulder position and cuff fit.

The cuff and sleeve placket

The cuff controls where the sleeve finishes at the wrist. The sleeve placket creates the opening needed to put the shirt on and allows the cuff to close neatly. Both sides should sit with similar shape and depth.

The side seams and hem

Side seams influence how the shirt falls through the torso. The hem determines whether the shirt is better suited to tucked or untucked wear. View the garment from the side to assess whether it hangs evenly.

Pattern placement

Checks and stripes make alignment easier to see, particularly at the front, pocket and yoke. Curved seams will not always match exactly, but the overall placement should feel deliberate.

Assess the complete garment

Button the shirt, sit, reach and bend the elbows. The individual details matter because they shape how the complete shirt behaves in motion.
