The Size Chart Looks Neat. Are Its Numbers Telling the Same Story?

One column says inches. The next says centimetres. Both look professionally formatted. Somewhere between the supplier’s document and the product page, a number has been copied into the wrong place.

This is not a problem an elegant layout can solve. Before AI recommends a size, there is a quieter job worth doing: checking whether the underlying chart is coherent.

For a fashion catalog, AI-assisted document review could help surface errors before shoppers have to make sense of them. The aim is quality control of information, not a new way to guess someone’s fit.

Let AI extract; let explicit rules check

Google’s Document AI Form Parser can extract text, key-value pairs and tables from documents. That makes document extraction a plausible starting point for reviewing a supplier’s size-chart PDF or image. It does not establish that the extracted measurements are correct. A proposed workflow would preserve the source file, extract its rows and show each extracted value beside the original. A reviewer could then approve the transcription before arithmetic or consistency checks begin.

Four questions every chart should answer

What is being measured?

A body measurement and a garment measurement describe different things. A chest label without a definition is incomplete. So is “length” without a clear measurement method.

For a men’s shirt, the reviewer should confirm what each field means from the approved specification. For a men’s kurta, retain its own definitions rather than borrowing the shirt’s chart because both have sleeves. Boys’ kurtas need a separate, correctly linked chart; adult labels must not be treated as children’s measurements.

Which unit belongs to each value?

Once the unit is confirmed, ordinary arithmetic can check conversions. As an illustrative example, 40 inches equals 101.6 centimetres. That is a conversion example, not a TRYBUY.IN size measurement or recommendation.

If a source says 40 in one column and 40 in the paired centimetre column, flag the discrepancy. Do not silently choose the value that looks more plausible. A label such as “40” might be a size name rather than a measurement at all.

Is a width being confused with a circumference?

A flat width is not automatically the same quantity as a measurement around the garment. Doubling a value is appropriate only when the measurement method actually supports that operation.

The audit should ask for the definition, not manufacture it. A clean spreadsheet containing the wrong quantity is harder to catch than an obvious blank.

Does the chart belong to this product?

Keep a record of the style identifier, category, source revision and approval date. A mathematically consistent chart can still be attached to the wrong shirt.

Check the product-to-chart relationship separately from the numbers. Shared colours do not prove shared sizing. Neither does a similar product photograph.

Use a review queue, not automatic corrections

Imagine three findings: a missing sleeve value, a conversion mismatch and a heading that does not specify body or garment dimensions. Give each finding a location in the source, a reason for the flag and a person responsible for resolving it.

AI can help phrase that review note. It should not fill the missing sleeve value by extrapolating from adjacent sizes. An unusual progression might be intentional; an apparently regular one might be copied incorrectly.

After corrections are approved, compare the displayed chart with the approved source again. Keep the original and revised versions so a later question has an answer more precise than “the system changed it”.

No. Chart auditing checks the quality and meaning of product information. Fit guidance uses information to help an individual make a choice.

Can extraction replace human checking?

No. Treat the extracted table as a draft, especially when headings, merged cells or measurement diagrams carry essential meaning.

Should a missing measurement be estimated?

Not for publication as a product fact. Obtain the approved value or make the information gap explicit.
